Claim Description
An insured disability care worker was renting a property to provide accommodation and care services for one of their clients when the client discovered a fire beside their bed. An ambulance and fire crew attended the property, but by the time they arrived, the property and its contents were severely damaged. The fire service was unable to determine the cause of the fire.
A month later, the landlord of the property sent a letter to the care worker alleging they were liable for the damages. They attached a quote for the total cost of renovations (approximately $66,000) and demanded payment as soon as possible.
Outcome
The care worker’s insurer appointed a legal representative, who entered into negotiations with the landlord’s solicitors. As the cause of the fire was unknown, the landlord’s claim was upheld. The insurer ultimately paid $87,000 to repair the damages and cover the care worker’s legal defence costs.
