A ransomware attack compromised an insured medical provider’s system, which held confidential patient information. The medical provider could not access their patients’ medical data and could not operate their business.

The medical provider’s insurer appointed an IT forensic consultant to fix system damage and investigate if the hacker still had access. A law firm was also appointed to assist the remediation process and advise if the client had to report the matter to the Privacy Commissioner.

The insurer paid $63,000 to cover business interruption losses, the forensic investigation and legal costs.
