Claim Description

A student engaged a migration agent to buy overseas student health cover on her behalf. The policy was initially purchased for the original course dates, but due to delays, the course dates changed. This resulted in a difference in cost, which the student paid to the migration agent. However, due to internal staff errors, the difference was not applied, and the policy was not updated accordingly.

The student was under the impression that their coverage extended until May 2023, but the policy actually expired in November 2022. As a result, the student was charged for an operation performed in March 2023. She then made a claim against the migration agent for the surgery.

Outcome

The migration agent’s insurer reviewed the supporting evidence (i.e., the insurance health cover and hospital invoices), and found the migration was negligent. The insurer paid $6,579.95 to cover the student’s hospital and pathology fees.
